AmeriCorps*VISTA builds permanent infrastructure and capacity in non-profit organizations and communities. The Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) VISTA project is no exception. MLSA VISTA members serve for a year to help bring individuals and communities out of the cycle of poverty. Since the establishment of Volunteers In Service To America in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, VISTA members have actively served in low-income communities by mobilizing people, businesses, non-profits and organizations with the goal of creating sustainable change in communities.
MLSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free civil legal assistance to low-income Montana residents. It is the mission of MLSA to protect and enhance the civil legal rights of, and promote systemic change for, Montanans living in poverty.
MLSA, in cooperation with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), has developed VISTA projects as a way to expand MLSA's capacity to provide services to poverty stricken Montanans. MLSA VISTA members serve in various locations throughout Montana and concentrate within one of three specific service areas: asset development, domestic violence or poverty law.
Since the MLSA VISTA Project was awarded its FY 2010-2011 Grant funding on July 17, 2010: VISTA members have:
Recruited 1,596 volunteers who performed 50,854 hours of service.
Generated $39,025 in donated goods and services.
Raised over $340,380 for community agencies.
AND HELPED TO MAKE MONTANA A BETTER PLACE.
